The Alarm Check Valve is the heartbeat of a wet pipe sprinkler system. It maintains constant water pressure above the clapper to keep the system charged and ready for activation. When one or more sprinklers open due to heat, the valve senses the flow change and triggers the water motor alarm or electric pressure switch, indicating system operation.

Unlike dry or deluge systems, the alarm check valve ensures instantaneous discharge of water from already-filled pipes. The retard chamber filters out brief pressure surges—preventing false alarms—while guaranteeing that genuine, sustained flow immediately activates the alarm system.

How the EMACO Alarm Check Valve Works

 

  1. Clapper Mechanism Operation
    Under normal conditions, water pressure on both sides of the clapper is balanced, keeping the valve closed. When a sprinkler activates, flow begins toward the open head, reducing pressure below the clapper and allowing it to lift—permitting continuous flow.
  2. Alarm Activation
    Once the valve opens, water passes through a bypass line to the retard chamber and then to the hydraulic alarm bell or pressure switch, sounding an audible alarm or sending an electrical signal.
  3. Retard Chamber Function
    The retard chamber delays alarm activation during transient pressure surges, ensuring that only sustained flow (indicating an actual fire) will trigger alarms.
  4. Flow Stabilization
    Internal components minimize water hammer and turbulence, preserving consistent flow and protecting downstream piping from sudden pressure shocks.
  5. Backflow Prevention
    When the flow ceases, the clapper returns to its seat, preventing reverse movement of water from sprinkler piping into the supply line.
