EMACO Air Release Valve is an equipment used in firefighting water lines to release trapped air from the piping system.

Air can collect inside water lines in many ways, such as during filling, pump operation, or normal system use. If this air stays in the pipes, it can disrupt water flow and affect the operation of the fire protection pipework. The air release valve is an equipment that lets this trapped air escape from the pipe works.

Normally, when there is water inside the valve, the internal float stays up due to the water and pushes against the orifice. When air collects inside this chamber, the float lowers, opening the orifice for the air to escape.

This valve is usually installed at points where air can accumulate. It keeps the fire protection water lines filled properly by removing air pockets from the system. This is a small piece of equipment, but it ensures that the piping is clear of air pockets and functions properly.

Why is removing trapped air so important in fire protection piping?
Air pockets disrupt water flow, reduce pipe cross-sectional area, and create pressure fluctuations. In firefighting, delays of even a few seconds can allow flames to intensify. By continuously venting trapped air, the valve ensures rapid water delivery, maintains nozzle performance, and prevents mechanical strain on pumps and pipe joints.
Can the Air Release Valve help prevent water hammer?
Yes. Water hammer often occurs when air pockets collapse suddenly during high-pressure flow. By evacuating these pockets gradually, the valve minimizes sudden pressure waves, protecting valves, fittings, and sprinkler heads from damaging vibration and shock.
Where should this valve be installed for best performance?
It should be positioned at high points in the pipeline—locations where air naturally accumulates. In multi-level buildings, every vertical rise and pump discharge line benefits. Proper placement ensures predictable venting and reduces hydraulic imbalance across the system.
Does the valve require manual operation or monitoring?
No manual input is required. The internal float opens and closes the vent automatically. However, periodic maintenance ensures the vent outlet remains unobstructed. Routine observation prevents issues caused by sediment buildup or seal wear.
What components typically wear first over time?
Floats, seals, and venting seats see the most pressure cycling. As water quality varies, mineral deposits can form. Replacing low-cost seals and periodically cleaning the vent keeps the valve responsive and avoids costly flow issues during emergencies.
